After Conan O’Brien published his open letter, expressing ‘enormous personal disappointment‘ over NBC’s Tonight Show decision, the story attracted even more attention from the public.  Today, Entertainment Weekly reported the following:

“Ending one of the ugliest chapters in NBC’s storied history, the Peacock officially announced today that it has reached an agreement with Conan O’Brien, who has agreed to abdicate his role as the host of The Tonight Show by Jan. 22 in exchange for a large cash payout that sources place at more than $40 million…” (Original article)

During the course of the Conan-NBC negotiation, there were plenty of animation videos being created to dramatize the story, including the following one, created by NMANews.  This video has gained quite some popularity on YouTube.  The animations are vividly descriptive and attractive.  However, because there is only one Chinese version available on YouTube, it’s a little difficult for western audience to understand the plot.  The following is a specific script with timelines attached.  Enjoy.

0′02″: The talk show in the US is making headlines on the paper these days.

0′04″: The “Tonight Show” from NBC has been hosted by Jay Leno for a long time.

0′09″: Conan O’Brien used to host the midnight program.

0′12″: Their programs did not interfere with each other.

0′14″: But in order to cut expense, NBC President Jeff Zucker adjusted the timing of Jay Leno’s show at night.

0′20″: The old 10 o’clock prime time programs were all readjusted to make room for Leno’s talk show.

0′24″: This way, Jay Leno’s new program would air punctually at 10:00 PM.

0′27″: Conan O’Brien got to host the “Tonight Show” as he dreamed.

0′31″: Talk show is easier and cheaper to make compared to TV Series.

0′32″: Therefore, NBC would have no chance of losing any money.  Isn’t that right?

0′37″: How come no one else thought of such a great idea before?

0′41″: Unfortunately, the audience didn’t appreciate the new arrangement.

0′42″:: Leno was losing ratings for his 10 o’clock program.

0′45″: Conan failed to attract more viewers for the Tonight Show as well.

0′51″: Jeff Zucker saw this worsened situation, struggling to turn it around.

0″54″: As a result, Zucker readjusted Leno’s show to a later time again.  In turn, Conan’s Tonight Show is bumped to after the midnight.

1′00″: Conan is enormously disappointed, writing an open letter to express his disappointment with NBC.

1′05″: Conan – “The tonight show can not be moved!”

1′07″: Because being funny is what they both do for a living, both Leno and Conan make fun of the other party regarding this issue.

1′13″: Not only are the NBC executives cursed, the two hosts also attack each other.

1′18″: Their competitors David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon, of course, take their turns to make sarcastic jokes on the situation.

1′24″: The audience was all curious about this debate, leading to an increased rating for all late night talk shows.

1′29″: All of a sudden, talk shows become more popular than TV shows.

1′33″: At this moment, NBC and Conan are negotiating for the new terms and conditions.

1′37″: If Conan leaves, he might receive up to $300,000.

1′41″: Letterman and Fallon both decided to support Conan for this tug of war.

1′47″: There is seemingly nobody on Leno’s side.

If you like NBC’s “The Office,” chances are you have already seen last Thursday’s Office episode named “Niagara, Part 2.” In this episode, the “Jim and Pam wedding” replays the “JK Wedding Entrance Dance” YouTube viral hit, which features Chris Brown’s “Forever.” We have covered this YouTube clip in a previous post written yesterday, called “Virology: 31 Top YouTube Viral Videos of All-Time.”   It’s just hilarious that they did this on “The Office”.  The “JK Wedding Entrance Dance” YouTube video has been viewed for 27,547,232 times.

As Google, Facebook, and YouTube become an unstoppable force and draw a massive number of Internet audience, it is not uncommon for mainstream media to reproduce some viral scenes, such as this one we see on YouTube, to attract extra viewers.  See the following clips related to this post.

With the proliferation of video sharing sites, video marketing has become a popular way to spread the words for online marketers.  When it comes to video sharing, the most commonly referred website is YouTube.  What many people don’t realize is that there are tons of other sites you can upload and watch videos other than YouTube. I will list 10 of my favorite sites here which are all good resources depending on specific needs you have with the use of your video.

1. Blip.tv (Alexa: 2,022; Google PR: 7)

Blip.tv

Blip.tv is a platform for creators of web shows offering free hosting, distribution, media management and optional advertising with a revenue share. The site claims itself to be the next generation television network.  Here is what you can read on the front page of Blip.tv:

We’ve been leveling the playing field for independent shows since May 11, 2005. Independent show creators are great at making content. We’re great at technology, business development, distribution and advertising sales. It’s a match made in heaven.

According to ZDNet blogger Donna Bogatin, “The blip.tv formula purposefully does not emulate the YouTube viral video sharing and friends and family video hosting model.” Videos uploaded to blip.tv can be automatically syndicated to YouTube, Vimeo, Roku, AOL Video, MSN Video and Live.com, TiVo, Verizon FiOS, Facebook, iTunes and other platforms. Blog software is supported as well, including Movable Type, WordPress and Blogger. Both basic and professional level accounts are available to users.

2. Vimeo (Alexa: 452; Google PR: 8 )

Vimeo is a respectful community of creative people who are passionate about sharing the videos they make.  The site supports embedding, sharing, video storage, and allows user-commenting on each video page.  Vimeo has gained a reputation as catering to a high end, artistic crowd because of its higher bitrate, resolution, and relative HD support.  All uploaded content must be original and non-commercial.  Both basic and Vimeo Plus level accounts are available for users.

3. Metacafe (Alexa: 150; Google PR: 7)

Metacafe

Metacafe is one of the world’s largest video sites, attracting more than 40 million unique viewers each month (comScore Media Metrix). The site specializes in short-form original content – from new, emerging talents and established Hollywood heavyweights alike.  Its videos are user-generated, user-selected, user-reviewed and user-rewarded.

4. Dailymotion (Alexa: 77; Google PR: 7)

Dailymotion

Dailymotion is a video sharing site similar to YouTube.  Use Dailymotion to:

• Share your videos publicly, or privately with family and friends
• Discover new videos through channels or tags
• Get feedback on your clips and creative work
• Spread your videos across the web by posting them to your blog, website, or social network profiles

As a Dailymotion user, you can either choose to become a basic user or a Motionmaker. Here are the advantages for a Motionmaker:

• Give your videos a chance to be featured
• Upload videos files of unlimited length
• Superior quality – shoot in HD, receive HD encoding
• Distinguish your work within the site as creative content

5. YouTube (Alexa: 4; Google PR: 9)

YouTube

YouTube is the most popular tubesite in the world today. YouTube users can upload videos which are smaller than 2GB.  Those videos must be 10 minutes or shorter in length if you’re using a basic account. There is no restriction in terms of the number of videos you can upload as long as they follow the 2GB/10min rule. YouTube lets you embed and customize the player, again, for free.

6. Tudou (Alexa: 57; Google PR: 7)

Tudou.com

Tudou means “Potato” in Chinese.  The site is currently the most populated video sharing site in China.  Since Tudou allows its users to upload full-length movies, the total amount of minutes of video being streamed daily from Tudou is significantly larger – about 15 billion minutes vs. 3 billion for YouTube.  According to Tudou website, the Shanghai-based service uses Adobe Flash technology to publish more than 20,000 new videos each day, including amateur content such as videoblogging and original videos, movie and TV clips, and music videos.

Unregistered users can watch videos on the site, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos, using on-line and Windows-based upload tools.  When I have Chinese content video to upload, Tudou is my first choice.  Tudou has become popular with western users because it allows them to watch full episodes of TV shows or full-length movies, rather than being restricted to short 10 minute clips as with YouTube.

7. YouKu (Alexa: 59; Google PR: 7)

Youku.com is ranked #1 in Chinese video sharing sector by China Internet Society, iResearch and Baidu User Index. Youku permits users to upload videos regardless of their length and currently has over 161 million videos.  Youku has partnered with a number of TV stations, film and TV production companies in China that regularly upload media content on the site. According to a Compete.com survey, the site attracted at least 6.5 million visitors in 2008.  YouKu is my second favorite video sharing site when it comes to uploading Chinese content.

8. Veoh (Alexa: 224; Google PR: 7)

Veoh

Veoh is a popular video portal, where you can access tens of millions of videos from major content publishers like CBS, ABC, WB, MTV Networks, ESPN, Sony/BMG and Lions Gate, to other video sites like YouTube and Hulu. Currently there are more than 100,000 publishers, using Veoh to connect with an audience of more than 28 million global, engaged, influential viewers. Veoh’s unique publisher optimization program gives publishers powerful tools to help them raise awareness of their content and cultivate loyal viewing audiences.

9. Viddler (Alexa: 2,234; Google PR: 6)

Viddler

Viddler is another innovative video publishing platform.  Use Viddler to

• Upload as many videos as you want—you get nearly unlimited space with Viddler
• Record videos directly to the site using your webcam!
• Post comments and tags at specific points in the video
• Share your videos with RSS and iTunes

Besides a personal account, you can sign up for a partnership account, which adds advertisements to your videos but the storage and bandwidth restrictions are removed. Both the personal and the partnership accounts are free.

10. Revver (Alexa: 3,257; Google PR: 6)

Revver

Revver is a video sharing site which shares its ad revenue with its content creators. Its users can comment each other, post video responses, build a network of friends, and create customized playlists.  Videos posted on Revver can go to places like AOL, Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Blinx, iTunes, AppleTV, WordPress, Blogger, TypePad and mobile phones.  The Wordpress plugin enables its users to start start a vlog in a snap.

YouTube has been a great place for posting and sharing video content. Personally, I like to keep an eye out for popular and new inspirational videos on YouTube. As a matter of fact, I have made a habit of watching inspiring videos for at least 15 minutes every morning after I return from the gym. It really helps me get the day started right and keep the positive energy flowing. Here let me share the top 13 of my favorite videos (plus 2 bonuses).

Category A – Speakers/Celebrities

1) Susan Boyle’s Sensational Britain’s Got Talent Video

This clip is now one of the most popular videos in the history of YouTube. The aggregate viewership of Susan Boyle’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent approached near 100 million views in its first nine days and earning the producers of the program (Wired.com). This inspiring masterpiece is a classic example of viral hit. Therefore, it is the #1 out of all the inspirational videos.

3) Tony Robbins Tells Rocky Story

This clip has always been my favorite. I like the movie “Rocky” since I was little. Tony Robbins has done a great job in telling a revealing story about Stallone’s relentless pursuit of a movie career. Although the beginning wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, Stallone persevered and succeeded massively! Great inspiration indeed.

4) Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

Here is a brief summary from Stanford University about this video – “Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005.” The speech script is available at here.

5) Will Smith – Running & Reading

I love Will Smith’s inspirational movies such as the Pursuit of Happiness. In this video, Will is emphasizing the importance of running and reading as a means to develop daily discipline. It features Will’s inspirational speech after winning at the 2005 Kid’s Choice Awards, accompanied by an awesome instrumental (For Da Love of Da Game) from DJ Jazzy Jeff’s 2002 Album, The Magnificent. Will says “The person who works the hardest wins.”

6) Get Motivated with Tony Robbins (A 22-Minute Ted Video Podcast)

Rarely do I see Tony Robbins’ seminars being uploaded on YouTube. Tony Robbins discusses the “invisible forces” that motivate everyone’s actions. Listen to this if you haven’t been to Tony’s live seminars. It is a great experience even watching it on YouTube!

Category B – Movie Clips

7) Al Pacino – “life’s This Game of Inches” Speech (Any Given Sunday)

“…You find out life’s this game of inches. And so is football. Because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small. I mean… one half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow too fast, you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. I think this movie clip is pretty self-explanatory. If we can, we must. Everybody has the potential, within themselves, to do something remarkable and outstanding. Key phrase here – “Keep Stretching Yourself.”

10) 40 Inspirational Speeches in 2 Minutes

Always love creative initiatives in utilizing Web 2.0 tools. Aside from being inspirational, this clip is a masterpiece which combines 40 movie speeches that runs for only 2 minutes. The remix is brilliant and I certainly appreciate the editor’s efforts.

Category C – Inspiring Slideshows

11) The Law of Attraction

Law of Attraction has always been the big secret for any success, no matter what you do. According to the great business philosopher Jim Rohn, “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” It’s really a great experience to reinforce our beliefs by watching this video again and again.

Bonus 1 – Rocky Theme Song

The Rocky series was originated in 1976. The film was written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. The film was inspired by the famous fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. Wepner had been TKO’d in the 15th round by Ali, but nobody ever expected him to last as long as he did. Wepner recalls in a January 2000 interview, “Sly (Stallone) called me about two weeks after the Ali fight and told me he was gonna make the movie.”

Bonus 2 – Stand By Me | Playing For Change | Song Around the World

Some time it is better to know that you are not alone in your journey of pursuing happiness and success. From the award-winning documentary, “Playing For Change: Peace Through Music“, comes the first of many “songs around the world” being released independently. Featured is a cover of the Ben E. King classic by musicians around the world adding their part to the song as it traveled the globe.
