The 140 Characters Conference: New York City (#140conf) was taking place April 20-21, 2010 at the 92nd Street Y. The bigger number of Twitter followers you have, the more potential to get noticed, generate more traffic, and possibly more revenue. While the equation seems to be simple, not many people are doing it well enough to amass followers swaying on every word you say. Here are a few tips to help you increase your popularity on Twitter:

1. When you need something, you just have to ask: Building your twitter followers, just like marketing or sales in businesses, is a numbers game. The more you follow, the more will follow you. Go to the directories where twitter users congregate and find the relevant category of twitter users who you will benefit from as followers and start asking to connect to them. In a rapid succession, find interesting people and connect. Don’t overdo this since the directories might classify it as spamming, but do a fixed number of people per day and don’t stop, ever.

2. Give something of value and ask to be followed: I once got a nice little email stating that I could download an e-book for free if I could follow them on Twitter — that was an interesting way to build their twitter following. Doing this in addition to building a list using normal opt-in forms on websites is a great way to drum up the number of your followers. It doesn’t always have to be an e-book or a free report. You could have them follow you if you have a sample product that could be sent to them in exchange. You could have them follow you for a free trial. Further, you could give them free access to your membership site if they follow you.

3. Surprise your followers by pampering them: I have been a great fan of throwing surprises at others for your benefit. It works in relationships (try surprising your children, your spouse or friends?) and in business too.  Do a search on local followers and meet them in person? Arrange for a meet-up in your area, using sites like meetup.com. Pick up a random follower on twitter and send in a free gift. You could even say good things about your followers, endorse their products and services (if any) or just praise them out of the blue. It feels good and it can’t kill you.

4. Re-tweet more and tweet less: One of the best ways to flatter someone on twitter is to re-tweet your followers’ tweets (or even that of those whom you follow). Re-tweeting, by the act itself, signifies that you value the post very much and that you think it is important enough for everyone else to take notice, or to read. This again comes from a very fundamental human trait – vanity and ego. The trick to succeed in life has always been to please others and not yourself. Tweeting is an act you do for yourself; but re-tweeting has powerful social benefits built-in.

How to Be More Creative on Twitter?

Twitter has been popular for the entire 2009. This trend shows no signs of slowing down this year.  So what does it truly take to make your Twitter profile stand out from the rest?  A little creativity always helps.  In a world where people are inundated with thousands of daily conversations on different social networks, doing things differently enables you to distinct your own identity and make a lasting impression among your audience.  In general, I’ve summed up 20 things that you can do to become a more creative user in the Twitterverse.  Without further ado, let’s get this list started.

Things to do before you tweet:

1. Choose a user name that is representative of your brand and easy to remember

2. Customize your own Twitter background (Two lists for your reference: here and there)

3. In your Twitter bio, spell out what makes you stand out. For example, here is what I wrote for my bio:

“Entrepreneur, Blogger, Founder @NYEBN (http://www.nyebn.com). I do not read DMs. Contact me using the @ sign.”

4. Follow creative people on Twitter, such as @Fuelcreativity. Remember that creativity is contagious

5. Create your own “creativity” Twitter list.  To get more ideas, visit this list from Listorious

6. Choose a creative Twitter icon set (example) when you link up your Twitter account on your blog

7. The 140-character limit really forces you to think creatively. Make sure you make your sentence thoroughly understandable and convey a well-written message

8. Get a mobile device that you can tweet direct from in case you see something in a gallery or on the street that spurs your creativity momentarily

9. Always think outside of the box before you tweet

10. Make a list of creative things that you can do at the beginning of everyday. After you’ve done it, tweet it.

Things to do when you tweet (creative ideas that you can tweet):

11. Inspirational quotes are always favored by most Twitter users, simply because they are positive messages

12. Write creative blog posts and tweet the links (example: zenhabit)

13. Create a list of creative people on Twitter and encourage others to follow them (Use #FF)

14. Tweet your own creative thoughts (Good ideas come and go. Make sure you document them well and tweet them out)

15. Inspiring site designs stimulate the creativity inside everybody. You should tweet them often (Example: 20 Most Inspiring Web Designs)

16. Tweet inspiring video clips (check here and there)

17. Tweet creative pictures you’ve uploaded to Flickr, Posterous, etc.

18. Write down a list of things you’ve done creatively every day and tweet the links (use Posterous or Tumblr)

19. Summarize the feedback/reactions from your followers. Do better when you tweet next time

20. Write a blog post like this one to teach people how to live creatively on Twitter

Twitter experienced a spike in its growth in 2009.  In 2010, its momentum shows no signs of slowing down.  Have you thought of your business strategies you should implement on Twitter?  If you believe in the power of social media marketing and happen to have a business, perhaps this post is the right one to read in order to set your game right for 2010.  People give their pitches and affiliate linkson Twitter all the time. While this spamming behavior is considered wrong by most of us, what can we do to effectively build relationships on Twitter? Here are my 30 techniques to help you take your business to the next level with Twitter.

1. Use your business name, instead of your own name, to register your Twitter account for branding purposes.

2. Write informative and educational blog posts about your products/services, and then tweet the links.

3. Use Twitter search to detect what other people are saying about your business.

4. Check Twitter “Trending Topics” regularly and possibly adopt your short term business strategies according to what’s popular now.

5. Use Twitter to “listen” to what your potential prospects are interested in.

6. Be helpful, and share daily tips on how your products/services supposedly make others’ lives easier.

7. Follow influential people in your industry and be in the known for the game.

8. Retweet what’s the latest  in your industry and keep your audience up-to-date.

9. Give advice regularly to show you are caring and you are knowledgeable in your niche.

10. Integrate your Twitter feeds into your Facebook Fan page (for your business) to increase your reach whenever you tweet.

11. Share tips about how to balance your business and your personal life.

12. Tweet links to articles posted elsewhere that can help your followers understand the industry better.

13. Be real, share your own thoughts and comments about industry news and events.

14. Create a Twitter list, summarizing the most impactful powerhouses in your industry your target audience should follow on Twitter.

15. Tweet regularly and slightly more often during regular business hours.

16. Redirect people to a tutorial on your blog or website when answering questions addressed to you on Twitter.

17. Share your company’s culture and the human side of your business.

18. Do not tweet affiliate links or make direct sales pitch (annoying).

19. Do not automate your direct messages to send your business info to every person that follows you, because most people hate automated DMs.

20. Share your customers’ testimonials on Twitter.

21. Separate your followers into different categories according to how well they fit into your target market and treat them accordingly.

22. Use certain hashtags that are common in your industry so your tweets are easier to find.

23. Be positive and motivate your followers daily (i.e., borrow good quotes).

24. Share success stories from your clients and encourage your followers to follow them on Twitter.

25. Follow your heart and ignore the negative tweets you receive.  Some people just don’t get it.

26. Integrate URL shortners in your tweets so you can leave more space for your own comments.

27. Design an appealing Twitter background picture using whatever is relevant to your business.

28. Be informative and concise when filling out your business profile info.

29. Use Twitter to gather opinions people hold about your business or industry (opinion poll).

30. Use Twitter as a customer service tool to answer questions and address concerns.

Twitter is, no doubt, one of the greatest inventions in the social media industry.  With Twitter’s rapidly growing popularity, there are plenty of opportunities left for companies that make third-party applications for Twitter, also called Twitter clients.  Some of these apps play significant roles in terms of facilitating our tweets. I’ve picked 13 must-have Twitter apps to share here. Here they are:

Here are more details for each one of them and how you can integrate them in your daily tweets.

Some URLs are too long to put in a context of 140 characters. Bit.ly allows users to shorten, share, and track links (URLs).  Tracking stats are available after users shorten their long links with bit.ly by adding a “+” sign to the end of any bit.ly link (for example,  http://bit.ly/6vcsQV+). At his point, it’s safe to say that 90% of my tweets contain links. Without Bit.ly, there wouldn’t be room for me to put in extra content in addition to my links.

TweetDeck is your personal browser for staying in touch with what’s happening now, connecting you with your contacts across Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and more.  TweetDeck shows you everything you want to see at once, so you can stay organised and up to date.

4. HootSuite

HootSuite can be used to monitor keywords, manage multiple Twitter profiles, schedule tweets, and measure your success. HootSuite lets you manage your entire Twitter experience from one easy-to-use interface.

5. TweetStats

TweetStats is a great statistics tool. Use it to graph your Twitter Stats including – tweets per hour, tweets per month, tweet timeline and reply statistics.

6. Tweetie

Tweetie

Tweetie is a fast, full-featured twitter client for iPhone and iPod touch. It offers everything you’d expect – from your timeline to trends – all with an incredibly polished user interface, fantastic performance, and unparalleled ease-of-use.

7. Brizzly

Brizzly is a reader that works with Twitter and Facebook. It simplifies your browsing and updating experience, while adding a few nifty extras.  It allows you to use multiple accounts, monitor searches, share photos, save drafts, interact with Facebook and edit trending topics.

Tweetmeme is a service which aggregates all the popular links on twitter to determine which links are popular. Tweetmeme is able to categorize these links into categories and subcategories, making it easy to filter out the noise to find what you’re interested in. I use its Retweet button on my blog.  Really love it.

11. Foursquare

According to its website, Foursquare is 50% friend-finder, 30% social cityguide, 20% nightlife game.  It not only helps you keep up with your friends, but exposes you to new things and challenges you to explore cities in different ways.

12. Evernote

Evernote

You can send your tweets directly into your Evernote account. With the Evernote-Twitter integration, you can easily capture the tweets you like – your own or those showing up in your stream. Plus, as an added bonus, you can now send yourself a quick note right from Twitter using direct messages.

13. SocialToo

SocialToo

SocialToo is aiming to help you clean up your Social Stream. SocialToo offers a suite of tools to help small, medium, and large brands to automate their social flow, while at the same time enabling them to remove the bots and focus on real relationships.

With the adding of the new features, Twitter has become a much more powerful tool for people wanting to establish meaningful relationships online. So what are the essential things to do in order to connect with people better on Twitter? There are 15 techniques that seem to work particularly well for me.

Let’s go over each of them quickly in the following section.

1. Tweet out something regularly, but not too often

2. Make sure you tweet something valuable that help people learn

3. When you RT, add your own thoughts to make you look real

4. Do not use auto-tweet, which makes you look like a robot

5. Answer your followers’ tweets and treat them seriously (Learn this from Gary Vaynerchuk @Garyvee)

6. Do not spam people in the DM

7. Ask a question every now and then, and measure whether there is an increase in the amount of answers you receive

8. Try to tweet more often during peak hours (9 AM – 12 PM EST would be ideal)

9. Write blog posts about Twitter occasionally to demonstrate your knowledge in this area

10. Try to have more conversations instead of RTing stuff all the time

11. Tweet inspiring quotes every once in a while (People have bad days)

12. Do not tweet affiliate links (Read 50 things not to do when you tweet)

13. Add humor into your tweets

14. Avoid the F-Bomb or any words like that (People walk away from rude people)

15. Tweet “Thank You” for people you want to how appreciation to

Conclusion

Some of these techniques are simple to implement.  Some others may require time and dedication. Given that I am a full time Internet entrepreneur,  you may find some of my suggestions challenging.  Do your best to move yourself closer to your Twitter audience by trying three of these techniques today and make measurable progress afterwards. Twitter is well known for its simplicity. As we all know, we can not upload pictures or other multimedia files directly to Twitter. Often times, I was asked questions regarding how to share photos with other Twitter users.  Well, Twitter does let you share your pictures through many ways. For example, you can upload the pictures to other websites.  Most times, these sites are associated with Twitter in one way or another.  You can then tweet out the link to the picture.

Here, let’s go through 4 of my favorite Twitter photo sharing sites.

1. TwitPic

Twitpic

TwitPic is the most widely used photo sharing service for Twitter users.  If you already registered on Twitter, you can just log into Twitpic using your Twitter username and password. It’s a simple service and very easy to use. You can post pictures to TwitPic both from your phone and your computer. There are also popular twitter clients that have built-in support features for TwitPic.

2. Posterous

Have you heard of Posterous? If you haven’t, try it out.  It’s a cool service.  With Posterous, you can post almost all media types to a single site via your email. Posterous supports images, video, audio, documents, and long text posts.  To read its Twitter help page, click here.

3. Ow.ly

Ow.ly

Ow.ly is a simple site that allows you to sign in with your Twitter username and password.  You can share files (Max. 10MB) and images (Max. 4MB).  It is a very convenient way to share pictures with your Twitter friends.  Ow.ly will soon support the video format too.

4. Twitgoo

Twitgoo

As you see from the above picture, Twitgoo uses my Twitter background as the new Twitgoo interface.  Whatever picture you upload, there will be a Twitgoo link associated with it. There is also a retweet button put below the picture which makes it easier for sharing purposes.

50 Things to Avoid on Twitter

Twitter is wonderful tool. As a Twitter lover, I use it for both social and professional purposes. However, let’s face it. Sometimes, when we get too “creative,” we end up losing followers. There is something called “Twitter Etiquette.” There are a number of articles that have outlined what not to do with Twitter, and I have read most of them. Consider this post as a summary of all those pointers.

Here are the 50 things we should try to avoid when we tweet.

1. Do not put your affiliate links in your tweets

2. Do not repeatedly pitch your own products/services

3. Do not defame other people in your tweets (They may be following you)

4. Do not tweet trivial things that no one cares, such as what you eat

5. Do not have somebody else to tweet for you

6. Do not automate your tweets

7. Do not pretend to be somebody you are not

8. Do not tweet nonstop (annoying)

9. Do not tweet the same messages more than twice (If you have a new blog post you want to tweet twice, add an “Earlier” the second time you tweet it.)

10. Do not tweet way too less (People forget your existence)

11. Do not only follow celebrities (They are boring)

12. Do not spam

13. Do not make up stories that are not true (It will come back to bite you and your reputation suffers.)

14. Do not make your tweets too long (Usually leave 20 characters for others to retweet)

15. Do not tweet somebody’s message without giving them credit (Add “RT” sign)

16. Do not ignore other people (Use “@” sign to answer their questions and concerns addressed to you)

17. Do not auto follow back everybody

18. Do not follow everybody you meet (Be selective)

37. Do not register for too many Twitter accounts (It’s hard to manage)

38. Do not leave your Twitter profile blank

39. Do not forget to listen and learn in the Twitterverse

41. Do not make your Twitter account look like a robot, such as the constant use of APIs

42. Do not be reluctant to unfollow people who don’t tweet often

43. Do not forget to integrate your tweets with other social media platforms, such as Friendfeeds, Facebook, and LinkedIn

44. Do not say anything that can potentially get your fired or prevent you from getting a job

45. Do not say anything that can potentially get you sued

46. Do not tweet something hard to imagine without attaching a link to a picture (Use TwitPic)

47. Do not complain or whine about things unless you are really, really pissed off

48. Do not forget to install a mobile app to help you tweet while away from your computer

49. Do not limit your creativity when you tweet (Innovate or die!)

50. Do not leave your iPhone charger at home when you are going out (It has happened to me three time when I tried to use TweetDeck with an exhausted iPhone battery.)
