This Week in Startups

If you are a podcast fan, you probably have heard of This Week in Startups (a.k.a. TWiST), hosted by Jason Calacanis.  I first heard of TWiST on Leo Laporte’s This Week in Tech.  After watching the 1st episode, I just got hooked on it.  This Week in Startups has great value for entrepreneurs, startups, and small businesses.

For each episode, Jason interviews a CEO of a startup, or other Internet celebrities.  If you have a startup or try to raise funds for your company, this is a great show you wouldn’t want to miss.  Plus, Jason is a great entrepreneur from New York, which is probably another reason why I keep watching the show.  Having watched certain episodes repeatedly, I want to share 6 classic TWiST episodes with WebStudio13 readers. Last week, I covered the best 15 tech podcasts (check it out).  Leo Laporte, the great American podcast pioneer, takes 7 spots on that list, with his newest podcast This Week in Google topping the list.  Here is the latest story about Leo Laporte.  During a keynote speech for the Online News Association on Oct. 2nd, Leo said his podcast program makes about $1.5 million in annual revenue, a number that’s doubling every year.

In his speech, Leo reveals his point of view on future media, predicting the inevitable demise of mass media.  According to Leo, he does about 20 podcast shows on a weekly basis and podcasts about 30 hours a week.  His podcast revenue mostly comes from show sponsors and advertising partners.  His site twit.tv is Leo’s 24/7 live podcast station, which has the ability to gather a huge amount of internet mobs in an instant.  During his speech, Leo says his podcast programs currently only cost about $350,000 per year, which is static, but the revenue is doubling every year.  Most importantly, he only has 7 employees.

Living in New York City, one thing I have got used to is listen to my favorite tech podcast shows on the subway.  Lots of people have approached me asking what’s the best podcast to subscribe to.  Well, I used to ponder the same question.  Now I can speak from my heart.  Here I will share the top 15 of my favorite podcasts (all can be found on iTune) to satisfy your cravings about high tech news and tips.

15. Cranky Geeks (John C. Dvorak)

Cranky Geeks is my latest discovery. I’ve listened to a few episodes so far and found its content is noteworthy.  Each week on the show, a group of expert panelists discuss the most controversial topics in tech.  John C. Dvorak, the show’s host, is a contributing editor of PC Magazine, for which he has been writing two columns, including the popular Inside Track, since 1986.

14. SlashDot Review (Andrew McCaskey)

SlashDot Review is produced by SDR News.  The host is Andrew McCaskey.  It’s a daily (M-F) Technology Podcast. The show highlights popular tech news from Slashdot, Digg and Reddit.

13. Today in Social Media (Clayton Morris)

Today in Social Media is a new podcast produced by Clayton Morris, a social media enthusiast living in NYC. This daily podcast explores the world of social media.  On his show, Clayton also interviews industry leaders who are pioneering the seismic shift of global media.  If you love social media, this is the show you don’t want to miss. Besides doing podcast, Clayton also has a YouTube channel where he features all his shows.

12. The Apple Byte (Brian Tong)

The Apple Byte is part of the CNET Podcast series.  It examines the fact, the theory and everything inside the world of Apple.  Brian Tong talks about the latest Apple announcements, the rumors, and much more on his show.

11. Security Now (Steve Gibson & Leo Laporte)

Security Now is a weekly audio security column and podcast by Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte. They take 30 to 90 minutes near the end of each week to discuss important issues of personal computer security.  Sometimes they’ll discuss something that just happened.  Sometimes they’ll talk about long-standing problems, concerns, or solutions. Either way, every week Leo and Steve endeavor to produce something interesting and important for every personal computer user.

10. The Engadget Show (Joshua Topolsky, Paul Miller, Nilay Patel, & Other Engadget Editors)

The Engadget Show was just launched on Sept. 17th, still fairly new.  In the first episode, Josh sits down with Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein for an in-depth discussion, then Nilay and Paul join the fray for a dissection of recent news — including the recent Apple iPod event, the Motorola CLIQ , etc.  The Engadget Show offers a live experience that incorporates one-on-one interviews with tech luminaries, raucous roundtables with Engadget editors, and more.

9. Macbreak Weekly (Leo Laporte, Andy Ihnatko, etc)

Get the latest Mac news and views from the top journalists covering Apple today.  The Macbreak Weekly podcasts have  both audio and video versions.  So if you are Apple fans, remember to check out both versions because they are all awesome!

8. Net@night (Amber MacArthur & Leo Laporte)

net@night is a weekly podcast hosted by Amber MacArthur and Leo Laporte.  net@night showcases new, fun, and interesting things that MacArthur finds online.  the show is available to be watched/listened to live via http://live.twit.tv.

7. Window Weekly (Paul Thurrott & Leo Laporte)

A weekly look at all things Microsoft including Windows Vista, Office 2007, Windows 7, and Xbox from the foremost Windows expert in the world, Paul Thurrott of the Super Site for Windows.

6. Buzz Out Loud (Tom Merritt)

Buzz Out Loud features Tom Merritt, producer Jason Howell, and a rotating roundtable of CNET’s top tech experts reviewing the day’s tech news. Each episode, five times a week, the crew analyzes, interprets, and argues about what all this technology means and what it’s doing to us. 3. The Tech Guy (Leo Laporte)

The complete aircheck of Leo Laporte’s technology call-in radio show minus commercials, news, and traffic. The show airs Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5p Eastern on the Premiere Radio Networks and XM Channel 158.   You can also download it to your iPhone or iPod.  One of my favorite shows.

2. Diggnation (Kevin Rose & Alex Albrecht)

Hosted by Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose, Diggnation is a weekly tech/web culture show based on the top digg.com social bookmarking news stories.  I got introduced to Diggnation at the beginning of 2009.  Then I just got hooked on the show.  I ended up catching up most of the episodes I had missed before.  Kevin and Alex are absolutely hilarious on the show.  Their style has attracted countless Diggnation fans.

1. this WEEK in GOOGLE (Leo Laporte, Gina Trapani, & Jeff Jarvis)

TWig (This Week in Google) is at the top of my list not because it is funny or it is backed up by world-class brands.  TWig can take the #1 spot because it is informative.  Every week after I am finished with a new TWig episode, I always feel there is so much more I have learned about Google.  The show is about the latest Google and cloud computing news.  The show is also fairly new (the 9th episode as of Sept. 27th). If you haven’t heard of this show, I would strongly recommend you go check it out.
