On April 1, NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (NYEBN) announced that it is giving away a free iPad to a lucky NYEBN member by the end of April.  NY Entrepreneurs Business Network is based in NYC and currently the group has grown to 4,300+ members in less than 11 months.  NYEBN started to implement monthly contests since the beginning of 2010.  The goal is to encourage its members to spread the word about the group and reward them based on their performance.

 

Why an iPad?

iPad is the most recent and popular electronic device announced by Steve Jobs. Since its announcement, we have read many positive iPad reviews from TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Mashable, Cnet, etc. The iPad was so popular that they were sold out during the 1st week in its launch period. Why spread the word?

In my announcement that goes out to the group yesterday, I emphasized 4 pointers why joining NYEBN is a no-brainer for any business owners living in the tri-state region:

1).  NYEBN is the only networking group that runs consistent free networking event in New York City with usually 300+ people attending

2). NYEBN is one of the fastest growing networking groups. The NYEBN community offers support for all its members

3). Anyone who joins the group will be immediately qualified for its incentive programs. For example, if John Doe joins the group on April 2, he will qualify to participate in the free iPad giveaway contest

How to get the iPad?

NYEBN will run this contest on a “first-come first-served” basis. The duration of the contest is the entire April. The first person who refers 30 people to NYEBN will get the free iPad.  All participants need to be NYEBN members.

All new members will be asked the following question when they join the group:

Who introduced you to the group? (List the person’s full name)

This question needs to be answered in full in order for the current members to get credit.

How to track the progress?

NYEBN  will be uploading a spreadsheet every few days (click here) that documents the program. On the spreadsheet, information will be made available in terms of the names of the people who are actively involved with the program. Everything is uploaded on the NYEBN site for full disclosure.

It is official now.  NY Entrepreneurs Business Network, also known as NYEBN, will start hosting digital networking events for local business people in NYC.  NYEBN, a business community based in NYC, was originally founded in May, 2009.  The group has grown to a 4,200-people organization over the past 10 months.  With the introduction of this new type of events, NYEBN is striving to create a positive environment where tech/internet entrepreneurs can network together and exchange valuable ideas.

Why do we host this type of event?  Here are the 5 major things we want to accomplish:

This post is a recap of a networking event hosted by NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (NYEBN) on Tuesday, Feb. 9.  NYEBN is a business networking group based in NYC.  Social media has always been a big component of this group in that we are currently giving monthly seminars to help our entrepreneurs understand the pivotal roles that social media plays in terms of building a sustainable business and developing long-lasting customer relationships.

This week, New York is being hit hard by the snowstorm.  But we are really pleased with the turnout at Tuesday’s event. Being a big social media advocate, I’ve done a short interview with one attendee and uploaded the clip to Vimeo to share with everyone. JC Hewitt is a young entrepreneur and a great networker.  I’ve had a thoroughly productive discussion with him the other day about social media and entrepreneurship.  See the video below.  I’ve also created a photo album which you can see in the following.

I am the assistant organizer of NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (http://nyebn.com). We host efficient networking events for our members, and such events typically take place on a very frequent basis. I’ve watched quite a few networkers over the last few months, some successful, some discouraged.

Networking is fun and should be something you look forward to. If you are going to attend an event like ours with hundreds of people attending, and engage in conversations with as many of these people as possible, you might as well enjoy yourself while doing it.

First, let’s look at some definitions of networking:

Mirriam Webster, date: 1967
1 : the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically : the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business

And a more up-to-date definition from Dictionary.com:
1. a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.

Networking in the ‘60s might have meant finding people to sell to, but the concept has evolved to mean creating an infrastructure of people and relationships. If you go to our events with the idea of immediately finding customers for your business, you are going to be sadly disappointed.

Let’s start with the things you should do. Before you go to an event, do whatever you need to do with yourself, such as the correct tie, the perfect blouse, etc. so that you have no attention on yourself or your appearance.

When you arrive, do the following: don’t think about you; put all of your attention on the person you are talking to; repeat the above.  If you really listen to the people who are talking to you and let them know it, then you can easily begin a relationship based on good communication.

Here are the things you should not do: put your attention on yourself and what you do; hard sell.

We’ve all endured the hard sell guys – the guys who are convinced that if they really got through to someone, that person would buy their service. Personally, I think of it as being accosted. If you try this technique you will find that not only will a sale not be made, but people will avoid talking to you from that point on.

How do you network? Walk up to someone, introduce yourself, ask what they do, request a card and move on. If someone should ask what you do, keep it short. Make notes if you want. If you connect with someone, enjoy the conversation. Otherwise, keep moving. It is as simple as that.

We all know that ultimately the reason you attend these events is to get new business. There are plenty of blogs and training sessions available to train you in exactly how to make that work.  Now are you ready to have the finest networking experience? It’s almost Tuesday, and I’m ready to hit the NYEBN networking event at La Pomme. I had a blast at the last event, and met a lot of interesting people–several of whom will be good business connections.

Sure, as a solo entrepreneur I know how important it is to network–I bet you do, too–but I’ll be honest with you.  About 90% of the business card I collect wind up in a shoebox on my bookshelf where, frankly, they’re not doing anyone any good.  It’s terrible, really, because five good follow-ups are worth more than a hundred moldering business cards. But following up always seems kind of…lame.  It has the desperate smell junior high school… “Great meeting you. Please be my friend/send me lots of business.”

But five of the business-owners who followed-up with me after January’s event managed it in such graceful, interesting, and diverse ways that I just might have to steal their ideas. Without further ado, here are five follow-ups that are guaranteed to help you win friends and influence people.

With a job offer

I woke up Wednesday to a request for a meeting from Eugene Moore of Moore Technology Consulting.  It seems he’s in the process of revamping his website, and may need a little Easy Writing to get it up-and-running.  Kismet?  Sure, you’re simply not going to need the services of every person you encounter at an event–and he and I may or may not wind up doing business together–but if you’ve had a project in mind for a while, and you run across that type of service provider at an event, ask them for a bid. It’s a great way to follow-up, and they just might be the connection you need.

With a demo

I had no idea what coaching actually was until I encountered Geri Mazur of Mazur Consulting Group. But since she offered me a free demo, I jumped at the chance (isn’t free a great word?).  We spent a fruitful half-an-hour on the phone together while she plied her craft, and I now really get not only coaching, but the unique attributes and attitudes that Geri herself brings to the field.  And as a follow-up strategy? Priceless.

With your best marketing tool

I contacted Boris Chernyy of Media Gravity because we’re in related fields–a no-brainer, right?  But his response to my generic “Let’s LinkIn” email contained several interesting and well-prepared case studies that showcased his business and its creative approach to problem-solving.

With an MBA

A mutually beneficial arrangement can open a lot of doors. Andrew Ran Wong was gracious enough to offer me the chance to post on his blog, paving the way for both of us to build our businesses at the same time.

With the best advice

Just a few days after the NYEBN Meetup, I actually attended another networking event–and who were the first people I saw as I walked in the door? It was Sean McVey and Eric Ast, the social media guys from Rising Lynx. Not only was I impressed by their networking tenacity, but they had already taped out the best drink specials–and they gave me the heads-up. Talk about value-add. (Editor’s note: Sean McVey and Eric Ast are both NYEBN members.)

So I guess the takeaway here is…get creative with your follow-up. It will help you stay top-of-mind, and keep you connected between events. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday. And to following up with you on Wednesday.

If you have been following WebStudio13 for the last year, you probably already know that I organize a business networking group in NYC called NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (NYEBN).  Not only do we organize quality/free networking events for all NYEBN members, we also give seminars intended to educate entrepreneurs on how to leverage social media and other technology tools.  To my surprise, the group has been going through a major expansion in the past 8 months.  Now we have attracted over 3,200 entrepreneurs representative of a variety of industries.  In 2010, we’ve decided to implement an array of new programs to make NYEBN even a better place for all entrepreneurs and business owners.  Primarily, here are the 5 things we plan on implementing for our group in 2010:

1.  Stick to 2 networking events per month

Our networking events generally have a turnout between 300 and 600 people.  We do networking events biweekly at different high-end NYC venues.  The venues that we feature are typically made available for us exclusively from 6-10 PM on a weekday night.  Check out the last event at 230 Fifth rooftop where we had the largest turnout (about 622 confirmed RSVPs) since the start of the group.

2. Give More Seminars Related to Social Media and Technology

Last year, we had featured all types of speakers from a variety of industries, including personal development, sales, marketing, etc. Given the importance of modern technology, we decide to do more seminars in the social media and technology fields.  Check out our next startup event at Microsoft where a dozen of tech startups will give their best pitch in front of a panel of VCs.  Also I will interview the Meetup founder Scott Heiferman on the 3rd week of February.  Check it out here.

3. Reward NYEBN Members for Bringing in New Members

We’ve launched an affiliate program starting from 1/1/2010.   By actively participating in the affiliate program, there are quite a few benefits NYEBN members are able to enjoy:

• Network with a bigger pool of business professionals and build relationships with them;
• Gain more exposure in the local market for your own business;
• More opportunities to learn in a diversified entrepreneurial environment;
