Previously, we have shared a variety of motivational videos (click here).  Today, I got to explore more great videos.  The 3 videos I am about to share here all have something to do with failure.  Indeed, “if you’ve never failed, you’ve never lived,” as stated in one video.  In this uncertain time, it’s important to gather courage and get out of your comfort zone.  Just go try something new and take risks!  As an entrepreneur, I have first hand experience with this, and I can totally relate to the message delivered in these videos.  If you’ve never seen them, I strongly encourage you to spend the next 10 minutes watching them.  You will be glad you did after you are done.

Digital Inspiration Resources

We all need a little inspiration every once in a while.  Thanks to various Web 2.o tools, it’s no longer a difficult task to get inspired on a daily basis.  Instead of spend big bucks going to a live seminar by Tony Robbins, you now can easily go watch his YouTube clip, without incurring any expenses.  Here, I will share 10 resources you can use to gain inspirations in the digital age.

2. Podcasts

Podcasts are becoming more and more mainstream now.  If you load up your iTunes store, you will see tons of different podcasts.  Here is a list of some best known podcasts in the world.  To find digital inspirations, check out these ones too

We’ve written many articles in the past to cover this topic.  Simply put, attending inspirational seminars that your local meetup groups host is a great way to get motivated.  If you live in the tri-state area, you can try out our group – NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (NYEBN).  We usually host two seminars per month, all serving educational and inspirational purposes.  Here is a series of articles related to NYEBN.

5. Amazon Books

Amazon is always the place I recommend for people to get books.  I’ve done a summary before about the 10 most inspiring Web 2.0 books you should get on Amazon.  Check it out.  Of course, you can have an eReader such as Kindle or Nook if you prefer.

6.  eBooks

eBooks are convenient to download online.  The most recent eBook I’ve read is Seth Godin’s “What Matters Now.” It’s a very inspiring book. Download it here.

7. Inspirational Websites

There are many great blogs that help you become a better entrepreneur or make you a social media expert.  One inspirational blog I recommend all the time is Leo Babauta’s Zenhabits.  If you’re into personal development, you can also check out David Riklan’s SelfGrowth.com.

8. Design Blogs

People gain their inspirations through a variety of sources.  Exceptional blog designs which stands out from the crowd always serve for great inspirational purposes.  Here are 20 blogs that have the most inspiring and extraordinary designs.

9. Social Bookmarking Sites

Via a simple search on the keyword “Inspiration,” you may find an array of great bookmarked articles on sites such as Delicious, StumbleUpon, and Digg.  For your reference, here is a list of the top 10 best social bookmarking sites.

10. Yourself

All the methods mentioned above won’t work if you are not willing to inspire yourself on a daily and consistent basis.  We must serve as an inspirational role model for ourselves, and be confident and optimistic about everything coming along our way.  You will realize sooner than later that a great attitude does make a big difference.  After all, success is 80% psychological and only 20% technical.

As the usage of social media becomes more widespread in our everyday life, it becomes more apparent that the majority of people choose to use social media for meaningful purposes, such as spreading news, staying connected, motivating others, etc. What’s pivotal about social media is its vital effect. For example, when you tweet an impactful story, your message can trigger hundreds of  retweets, which is called network effect. Hence, using social media as a motivational tool has become a common practice amongst all of us.

Here we will walk through 5 techniques regarding how to motivate your social peers via social media and tools alike.

1. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc…

We use the above mentioned tools, often times, to share a joke, or tell a trivial accidental encounter. Have you ever imagined how powerful they can be if we use them to empower people regularly? Especially on Twitter, it’s not uncommon for me to tweet 10 or more inspiring quotes in a single day. Sometimes, my quotes get retweeted over and over again. The feeling is, indeed, insurmountable after knowing you have made a difference to cheer somebody up.

2. Wordpress, Blogger, Tumblr, Posterous, etc…

Some people claim that blogging, just like RSS, has faded away gradually as more advanced tech tools are raising the tide.  I, like most fanatic bloggers, am completely on the other side of this argument. Ironically, blogging has become a core component among all communication tools most used today. Personally, I like to blog about inspiring stories/videos, personal development tips, etc. Wordpress is what I use for WebStudio13. On top of that, I am also in favor of Posterous and Tumblr, each of which has unique features that set it apart from other blogging platforms.

3. Lulu, Issuu, Scribd, etc…

You probably have spotted the similarities among the tools in this category. Lulu, Issuu, and Scribd are all self-publishing tools you can use. If you are ambitious enough to make a difference in somebody else’s life, why not make your mark by publishing your own product?  With these tools, publishing a book can never sound as daunting as it used to be.

Nowadays, anybody can self publish their own eBook.  A personal development book is what I would write and publish.  After all, what’s better than share your personal experiences with people discouraged by the waves of everyday life?  Social media would be perfect in terms of promoting your eBook cost-effectively. Perhaps you can reach an even broader demographic by combining different social networks. The options are limitless.

4. Meetup, Eventbrite, Yelp, etc…

Take a guess.  How would you use these tools mentioned in this category?  Yes, you may use them to help you organize local events. While technology is a must-have today for building social bondage, hosting offline meetings is still the most effective way in terms of conveying inspirational messages.  Just imagine how impactful Tony Robbins‘ seminars are. However, the online tools have undeniably made organizing offline meetings more convenient. I’ve invited motivational speakers to have done quite a few events for my group in the past (here and there). With the help of these listed tools, you motivational seminars will be the most spectacular and unforgettable events people have ever seen.

5. YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, etc…

Instead of write articles, some people like to share their own stories via a simple video. These tools listed above make publishing videos a snap. Just go get a flip camera and you’ve got what you need.  Here is an example of what a viral inspirational video should look like:

Yesterday, as I was ranking the Amazon Top 10 Web 2.0 Books, I promised to write another review for the book The 4-Hour Workweek (4HWW). This book is authored by Tim Ferriss. In fact, the book was published in 2007.  Therefore, I am not going into the things people will write when they review a book. Instead, I would like to extend the ideas of the book to the Web 2.0 context.  In this post, I will illustrate why I think 4HWW has great tips for Internet entrepreneurs (Infopreneurs). So here we go.

A Brief Summary of the Book

The 4-Hour Workweek is about lifestyle design. As far as I am concerned, the author Tim Ferriss is the ultimate master of escaping 9-5, and living a mobile lifestyle. Here are the four main components of this book:

1. Definition – Define what it is that you truly want, stop following the majority, and join the new rich;

2. Elimination – Prioritize things based on its importance. Make a to-do list of the things that matter the most to you and demand great attention from you.

3. Automation – Hire a virtual assistant, and outsource the daily tasks that are not essential to you and require your repetitive efforts.

4. Liberation – Create a streamline process of getting things done without your presence.  I like to call it passive residual income.  Embrace a mobile lifestyle.

If you have read the book, you know what I mean by those four points. Otherwise, just bear with me as I will draw parallels between 4HWW and an Internet business in the following.

Connecting the Dots

There are mixed reviews about 4HWW. For example, on Amazon,  some people say the book is flawed in that it does not specify how to achieve a mobile lifestyle. Most people have no clue when it comes to outsourcing.  While the author’s own story is fascinating, most readers don’t know how to do it.  In this post, that issue is not my concern and shouldn’t be yours. In the following, I would apply the 4HWW theories to the Web 2.0 context. I have broken it down to specific points below. Here let’s go through each one of them.

• Definition: Look at the Internet new rich, including some very well known blogs such as TechCrunch, Mashable, etc.  For them, serving the masses with fresh news content is their mission.  They define success as reporting on-time news about social media and tech products.  In my case, I define my passion as offering tips about tweeting, blogging, and social media marketing. It’s a great feeling to see other people benefit from your efforts.  So first step, you gotta know what it is that you are passionate about.
• Elimination: I am now able to eliminate the tedious tasks I used to have to face everyday while working in Corporate America. My lifestyle now is designed to grow my business or increase the traffic on my site. Everyday is a new day with something to learn. Most importantly, I don’t have to worry about doing the non-relevant tasks that are considered a waste of my time.  The ability to eliminate gives you the joy and power to concentrate whatever appears most essential to you.
• Automation: In the Web 2.0 era, “automation” basically means having other people pay you while you enjoy what you do. If you are a blogger, the traffic you are able to accumulate on your site eventually will bring you sponsors, potential customers, or even opportunities to speak at major conferences.  In other words, automation enables you to enjoy passive residual income.

• Liberation: This is the dream of every Internet Entrepreneur. After your Web business has got to certain scale, you’d be able to free up your time by hiring people or even using high-end sofoware. For example, if you have tons of photos to upload to Flickr everyday, they can outsource it to an overseas assistant. Let’s say, someone in Philippine. In my case, I have a Meetup group. I would love to have someone help me handle the administrative tasks, such as replying emails and answering phone calls.

YouTube has been a great place for posting and sharing video content. Personally, I like to keep an eye out for popular and new inspirational videos on YouTube. As a matter of fact, I have made a habit of watching inspiring videos for at least 15 minutes every morning after I return from the gym. It really helps me get the day started right and keep the positive energy flowing. Here let me share the top 13 of my favorite videos (plus 2 bonuses).

1) Susan Boyle’s Sensational Britain’s Got Talent Video

This clip is now one of the most popular videos in the history of YouTube. The aggregate viewership of Susan Boyle’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent approached near 100 million views in its first nine days and earning the producers of the program (Wired.com). This inspiring masterpiece is a classic example of viral hit. Therefore, it is the #1 out of all the inspirational videos.

This clip has always been my favorite. I like the movie “Rocky” since I was little. Tony Robbins has done a great job in telling a revealing story about Stallone’s relentless pursuit of a movie career. Although the beginning wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, Stallone persevered and succeeded massively! Great inspiration indeed.

4) Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

Here is a brief summary from Stanford University about this video – “Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005.” The speech script is available at here.

5) Will Smith – Running & Reading

I love Will Smith’s inspirational movies such as the Pursuit of Happiness. In this video, Will is emphasizing the importance of running and reading as a means to develop daily discipline. It features Will’s inspirational speech after winning at the 2005 Kid’s Choice Awards, accompanied by an awesome instrumental (For Da Love of Da Game) from DJ Jazzy Jeff’s 2002 Album, The Magnificent. Will says “The person who works the hardest wins.”

6) Get Motivated with Tony Robbins (A 22-Minute Ted Video Podcast)

Rarely do I see Tony Robbins’ seminars being uploaded on YouTube. Tony Robbins discusses the “invisible forces” that motivate everyone’s actions. Listen to this if you haven’t been to Tony’s live seminars. It is a great experience even watching it on YouTube!

Always love creative initiatives in utilizing Web 2.0 tools. Aside from being inspirational, this clip is a masterpiece which combines 40 movie speeches that runs for only 2 minutes. The remix is brilliant and I certainly appreciate the editor’s efforts.

11) The Law of Attraction

Law of Attraction has always been the big secret for any success, no matter what you do. According to the great business philosopher Jim Rohn, “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” It’s really a great experience to reinforce our beliefs by watching this video again and again.
