Gabriel Shaoolian Bio

Gabriel Shaoolian, the founder of Blue Fountain Media, is a classic entrepreneur that has grown the company from a three-person operation working out of a cramped corner of his apartment into a thriving 70-person company serving clients that range from start-ups to the Fortune 500. Some of his clients include: The NFL, Nike, Procter & Gamble and Elizabeth Arden.

Blue Fountain Media is a website design, development and online marketing firm in Union Square, New York City. It’s a full-service shop in building, designing and marketing websites. The company has achieved some particularly impressive results with its SEO work (simply Google “website design company“) and received a 5 Star Dun & Bradstreet rating for outstanding service and work quality. Ellen DePasquale, The Software Revitalist and founder of Efficient Office Computing, is a well-known software expert. She brings more than 20 years of software experience to her consulting, training, writing, and public speaking. Ellen’s approach to software is personalized and goal-based, focusing on features that produce the desired results.

Ellen is a passionate speaker and has been invited to talk about software nation-wide by a host of organizations including the Financial Women’s Association, NYSSCPA, Executive Women’s Golf Association, and Inc. Magazine. She has participated as both a speaker and a moderator for two international events; Insights (2006 & 2007), Sage Software, Inc.’s annual reseller conference and the American International Toy Fair (2001 & 2002), where she also served on their Honorary Conference Advisory Board. It is official now.  NY Entrepreneurs Business Network, also known as NYEBN, will start hosting digital networking events for local business people in NYC.  NYEBN, a business community based in NYC, was originally founded in May, 2009.  The group has grown to a 4,200-people organization over the past 10 months.  With the introduction of this new type of events, NYEBN is striving to create a positive environment where tech/internet entrepreneurs can network together and exchange valuable ideas.

Why do we host this type of event?  Here are the 5 major things we want to accomplish:

1. Encourage the usage of Internet tools in developing viable  business plans;

2. Foster positive learning environment where information flows freely;

Read an article over the weekend on The New York Times titled “New York Isn’t Silicon Valley. This post is a recap of a networking event hosted by NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (NYEBN) on Tuesday, Feb. 9.  NYEBN is a business networking group based in NYC.  Social media has always been a big component of this group in that we are currently giving monthly seminars to help our entrepreneurs understand the pivotal roles that social media plays in terms of building a sustainable business and developing long-lasting customer relationships.

This week, New York is being hit hard by the snowstorm.  But we are really pleased with the turnout at Tuesday’s event. Being a big social media advocate, I’ve done a short interview with one attendee and uploaded the clip to Vimeo to share with everyone. JC Hewitt is a young entrepreneur and a great networker.  I’ve had a thoroughly productive discussion with him the other day about social media and entrepreneurship.  See the video below.  I’ve also created a photo album which you can see in the following.

I am the assistant organizer of NY Entrepreneurs Business Network (http://nyebn.com). We host efficient networking events for our members, and such events typically take place on a very frequent basis. I’ve watched quite a few networkers over the last few months, some successful, some discouraged.

Networking is fun and should be something you look forward to. If you are going to attend an event like ours with hundreds of people attending, and engage in conversations with as many of these people as possible, you might as well enjoy yourself while doing it.

First, let’s look at some definitions of networking:

Mirriam Webster, date: 1967
1 : the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically : the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business

And a more up-to-date definition from Dictionary.com:
1. a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.

Networking in the ‘60s might have meant finding people to sell to, but the concept has evolved to mean creating an infrastructure of people and relationships. If you go to our events with the idea of immediately finding customers for your business, you are going to be sadly disappointed.

Let’s start with the things you should do. Before you go to an event, do whatever you need to do with yourself, such as the correct tie, the perfect blouse, etc. so that you have no attention on yourself or your appearance.

When you arrive, do the following: don’t think about you; put all of your attention on the person you are talking to; repeat the above.  If you really listen to the people who are talking to you and let them know it, then you can easily begin a relationship based on good communication.

Here are the things you should not do: put your attention on yourself and what you do; hard sell.

We’ve all endured the hard sell guys – the guys who are convinced that if they really got through to someone, that person would buy their service. Personally, I think of it as being accosted. If you try this technique you will find that not only will a sale not be made, but people will avoid talking to you from that point on.

How do you network? Walk up to someone, introduce yourself, ask what they do, request a card and move on. If someone should ask what you do, keep it short. Make notes if you want. If you connect with someone, enjoy the conversation. Otherwise, keep moving. It is as simple as that.

We all know that ultimately the reason you attend these events is to get new business. There are plenty of blogs and training sessions available to train you in exactly how to make that work.  Now are you ready to have the finest networking experience? New York Tech Meetup hosted a very interesting meeting on Tuesday, February 2nd.
