Merriam-Webster defines “Alpha” as “socially dominant in a group of animals.” As social media becomes a bigger component of the web, it’s inevitable that we see more people call themselves as “social media experts.” Have you thought of what are the key characteristics of all social media evangelists? What make them stand out from the crowd and march toward the “alpha” category? This article defines the 33 signals for an alpha social media evangelist.
1. They are informers, usually using tools such as Twitter to spread links that point to information-rich articles.
2. They are giving away valuable things for free, such as how-to articles, video tutorials, etc.
3. They are usually early adopters, with things such as new tech gadgets or trendy social network sites.
4. They are willing to experiment different things at once, such as blogging, podcasting, v-blogging, authoring books, speaking at conferences, etc.
5. They usually have a lot of fans for their own Facebook pages.
6. They probably have their own blogs, using platforms such as Wordpress, Typepad, Posterous, Tumblr, etc.
7. They are highly influential within their communities.
8. Their names typically dominate the first 5 Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) if being searched.
9. They would travel very frequently, doing keynotes and making speeches in different parts of the world.
10. They, most likely, won’t respond to your emails or tweets when being contacted.
11. They are opinion leaders.
12. They usually have their own LinkedIn groups.
13. They would have lots of LinkedIn connections and recommendations.
14. They are not afraid of speaking in public. Actually, most are good at public speaking.
15. They are trend setters. We call them geeks.
16. They, most likely, have published their work on New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or been interviewed on TV networks such as CNN, BBC, etc.
17. Content published by them tends to go viral fast.
18. Their profiles usually can be found on Wikipedia or their own Google Profiles.
19. On Twitter, they tend to have a huge amount of followers (i.e. 100,000+) and get listed 1,000+ times.
20. They know how to gather an Internet mob of thousands of supporters in an instant.
21. For them, reputation matters more than money. We call them our “trust agents.”
22. With their target market audience, they have one thing that can not be duplicated by their competitors, which is relationship.
23. Their articles or YouTube videos tend to get most diggs, and get bookmarked more on Delicious or StumbleUpon.
24. They usually have a “verified account” stamp for their Twitter profiles.
25. You will see their stories being quoted over and over again when you read articles or books in the same industry.
26. They usually have their own online communities, such as RSS subscribers, Meetup groups, etc.
27. They tend to be more creative and innovative than average people.
28. Marketing and branding themselves matters more than hard selling.
29. They understand becoming famous on the web is not an overnight thing. So they are patient and consistent in what they are doing.
30. They are usually bold and willing to experiment with new things.
31. Most of them are entrepreneurs. So they have good time management skills and great self-disciplines.
32. They know the rule of the game, which is to give to receive and build relationships.
33. They are not afraid of “living in public.”
