One of the biggest international news last week was the earthquake tragedy in Haiti. Social media, once again, proves to be a pivotal tool in raising money and helping with the Haiti relief efforts. In the aftermath of the quake, people around the globe are doing everything they can to help Haiti recover from the tragedy. The Red Cross has raised $5 million through text message campaign by Thursday, Jan. 21st. So for us, what can we do with social media to help Haiti? Here are 10 ideas to get you started.
1. Text “HAITI” to 90999 (doing so charges $10 to your cellphone bill towards a donation.) And help spread this message via Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks.
2. Follow the Red Cross on the following networks, and share information you find with your own networks on a timely manner.

- Red Cross on YouTube
- Red Cross on Flickr
- The Red Cross Blog
3. Write a blog post (like this one) and call for donation efforts from your readers.
4. If you are a podcaster or a video blogger, don’t forget to mention different ways people can donate on your show.
5. Share different ways people can make a pledge online, such as using the following website
6. Embed and tweet impactful videos that call for people’s donation efforts, such as this one:
7. Add hashtags such as #HopeforHaiti or #HelpHaiti when you tweet.

9. If you have a touching story about Haiti’s earthquake, share it on CNN’s iReport so others can help you spread the message. Examples include this one.
10. Use Twitter photo sharing sites (i.e. Twitpic) to post and share the catastrophic earthquake images from Haiti.
