Become a Better Communicator
Have you ever felt intimidated making a public speech in front of your college classmates? Do you have public speaking phobia? Have you ever thought that social media can improve your communication skills? This post will help you find solutions for these questions. In my own quest of becoming a better blogger and communicator, I have stumbled upon these secrets that allow me to learn from my own experience in using social media and make measurable progress for both my written and verbal communication skills. Here are the 5 tips I have to share today.
1. Start a Blog
Start a Blog
10 years ago, bloggers were nearly nonexistent. But the situation has taken a reverse turn today. In the Web 2.0 era, different blog platforms, such as Wordpress, & Blogger, have made it so much easier to start a blog. So what benefits are coming with this? Well, first and foremost, it is the opportunity to perfect your own writing skills.
Imagine the daily practice a disciplined blogger has to go through. In order to make a blog post appealing to the target market audience, the topics need to be well researched, the tone should be adjusted to appeal to specific readers, and the blog needs to be updated many times on a weekly basis. Blogs are great publishing platforms which allow the readers to comment and critique about particular posts. A blogger needs to handle all these different issues while continually blogging about his/her passion without giving up.
A disciplined blogger needs to write, on average, 4 times a week. That equals approximately 200 written articles in a one-year period of time. All this written content can transform into something powerful and remarkable in the end that will dramatically enhance your critical thinking and writing skills as a decent communicator.
2. Write & Publish an E-book
Publish an E-Book
Information products are a dime a dozen. Different online publishing tools, such as PRWeb, have drastically lowered the threshold for any publishers. As Chris Anderson, editor in chief of Wired magazine, mentioned in his book “The Long Tail,” the mainstream hits are no longer the leading force of our society. Instead, the not-so-popular products that only exist in the tails, or niches, now can be easily delivered to the mass audience.
For example, if you are passionate about raw & organic chocolate and eating healthy, you can write a book that encapsulates all your thoughts and tips about healthy chocolate. Via microblogging sites such as Twitter, you then can tactfully deliver your message to people in your network.
Just like starting your own blog, writing an E-book also requires disciplines and consistency. But in the end, you will find great improvement in your writing skills. Moreover, if your E-book sells well, you may well land a deal in the future for Amazon to sell your next book and become a well known author. In this day and age, doors are wide open for anybody who is courageous and innovative enough to try out bold ideas.
3. Organize a Meetup Event
Organize an Event
You may have read my previous articles on how to organize successful events. If you believe in your ability to lead, form a cohesive group which allows you to practice your leadership skills. Take our New York group for example, every time we have a meeting, I always make public announcements about guest speakers and event schedule. This is a great opportunity to overcome your stage fright.
Plus, as the organizer of a Meetup group, you can always nominate yourself as the speaker for a particular event if you have sufficient knowledge about the topics involved in that realm. Practice makes perfect. You would have to put yourself in front of the public repeatedly to get used to the spotlight.
4. Make a Podcast
Make a Podcast
I have written a few posts about podcasting before. Plain and simple, podcast is another great tool we can leverage in order to improve our speaking skills. Leo Laporte is a legend when it comes to podcasting. I’ve found that he is a very well-spoken person. I’ve got nothing but respect for his ability to answer all kinds of questions addressed by his audience live on the TWiT podcast.
Leo is a great role model for anybody who wants to become a better communicator via hosting podcasts. Here is a great short documentary featuring Leo Laporte and how he started his million dollar podcasting business. It’s a pretty inspiring story.
5. Initiate a Conversation on Twitter
Initiate a Conversation
Some people do not possess great communication skills because they are shy, afraid of starting any conversations in public situations. Here is my remedy for this problem. Try to ask at least 5 questions on Twitter publicly every single day and engage your followers in interesting conversations with you. Practice it consistently for a couple of months. I guarantee you that your ability to handle open conversations will drastically improve over time . There is no doubt that Twitter is the greatest when it comes to practicing your communication skills.
Conclusion
I’ve listed these five tips to help you become a better communicator. Remember, practice makes perfect! Meanwhile, this list is not exhaustive given it’s only based on my own experiences. If you have any other methods that have worked for you, feel free to share. I am sure our audience will appreciate it.
