Earlier this summer, the Onion News Network had this news about the NYU dorm fire. To examine the cause of the dorm fire, the NYPD went through 43,000 pictures taken about the party. According to the NYPD detective Ben Stadler, “after examining the evidence from 25 iPhones, 15 Blackberries, 10 video cameras, and 40 digital cameras obtained from the students who attended the party, we were able to reconstruct every segment of the event…..” Eventually, the NYPD found that the culprit of the fire is a 22 year old NYU student who dropped the lit cigarette onto the carpet as you may see from the following video.
While most people will find it interesting about the way the police resolved the mystery of this case, we couldn’t help but ask one question: Does privacy still exist in the digital age? Yes, tools such as iPhone, Blackberry, and digital cameras are nice, but would you be willing to upload your party scenes onto your Facebook or Flickr photo album? Is it possible that your current or potential employer discover anything from your social profile that you don’t want them to see?
