As a social media entrepreneur, I’ve realized the key to learning and applying social media knowledge to any business can be best summarized in two main points: 1. Awareness; 2. Guidance. Awareness equals the realization of social media’s pivotal role. This1st point is the fuel in the furnace of acquiring more social media skills in order to grow your business. Guidance signifies the textbook, outlining the learning principles and techniques needed in order to succeed. My experience tells me this 2nd point mostly involves learning from social media experts, such as successful bloggers, podcasters, or viral video producers. This post will help you understand these two key components through 27 simple quotes, which are selected from some of my favorite blogs. I’ve included these blogs as well for your reference.
Note: All 27 quotes are arranged in the sequence that represents your thought process. Try to follow this 5-step logical order as you continue to read:
Recognize the Need to Adapt to Social Media —> Embrace Change/Challenge the Status Quo —> Understand Why Social Media is the New Mainstream Media —> Learn Why Google Is So Popular —> Take On the Tools to Become a Leader in the New Media Age
1. “I recognized early on in my own career that some people want to feel safe and get a paycheck every 2 weeks without challenging the status quo. I also recognized that these people had convictions about things that made them seem to come alive when they talked about them. Why not take that passion and conviction and try to spend more time on it?“
– Eric Friedman, Marketing.FM2. “Leadership is scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort required to lead.”
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog3. “What separates the successful from the unsuccessful is the acknowledgement of weakness. Bring your weaknesses to the front of the line, acknowledge them, and learn from them. Think of them as a valuable tool rather than trash to take out.”
– Tim Jahn, TimJahn.com4. “You don’t have enough time to be both unhappy & mediocre. It’s not just pointless; it’s painful.”
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog5. “Change isn’t made by asking permission. Change is made by asking forgiveness, later.”
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog6. “Without a specific reason for the consumer to behave, without a reward or benefit, the overwhelmed consumer will refuse.“
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog7. “Human beings are far more likely to communicate ideas and information with others when they are emotionally engaged. Find the key issues that concern your audience and then inculcate them within your marketing plan to get an emotional response.”
– Maki, DoshDosh.com8. “People don’t believe what you tell them. They rarely believe what you show them. They often believe what their friends tell them. They always believe what they tell themselves.”
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog9. “Those who ignore the party/conversation/network when they are content and decide to drop in when they need the network may not succeed. It’s pretty easy to spot those that are just joining the network purely to take – not to give. Therefore, be part of the party/conversation/network before you need anything from anyone.”
– Jeremiah Owyang, Web-Strategist.com10. “If you’re a marketer who doesn’t know how to invent, design, influence, adapt, and ultimately discard products, then you’re no longer a marketer. You’re deadwood.“
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog11. “Evolution is evolution – and it’s happened before us and will continue after we’re gone. But, what’s taking place now is much more than change for the sake of change. The socialization of content creation, consumption and participation, is hastening the metamorphosis that transforms everyday people into participants of a powerful and valuable media literate society.“
- Brian Solis, BrianSolis.com12. “In a world where seemingly everything is getting more expensive, the price of digital technology continues to fall and the differences between those two economies are growing. If getting rich was the incentive to go digital a decade ago, saving money may be an even stronger motivation this time.”
– Chris Anderson, LongTail.com13. “How can you squander even one more day not taking advantage of the greatest shifts of our generation? How dare you settle for less when the world has made it so easy for you to be remarkable?”
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog14. “Social media isn’t the end-all-be-all, but it offers marketers unparalleled opportunity to participate in relevant ways. It also provides a launchpad for other marketing tactics. Social media is not an island. It’s a high-power engine on the larger marketing ship.”
– Matt Dickman, technomarketer.typepad.com15. “The old saying tells us, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Let’s update that for today’s world and recognize that the way to a blogger’s keyboard is through their ego.”
– Peter Kim, BeingPeterKim.com16. “Conversations among the members of your marketplace happen whether you like it or not. Good marketing encourages the right sort of conversations.”
– Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog17. “Blogging, Podcasting and staying up to date on Twitter, Facebook and more is real work. – Robert Scoble, scobleizer19. “Stop looking at the Web as merely a display opportunity and not a way to interact. That does not create a new business model, it just shifts one that isn’t growing and is outdated. The reason sites like Google are stealing advertisers from daily newspapers is not because Google has more eyeballs. It’s because Google used the interactivity of the Web to deliver a new, better way to advertise.“

You have to be. Believing that people will listen to and find value in what you really want to say requires that.”
