7 Things to Keep You Productive When Your Internet Goes Down

Recently, I’ve been trying to increase my productivity when working. For example, I am now restricting myself to only check emails twice daily. Sometimes, It’s really hard to fight the urge to stay connected. But I just keep telling myself it is important to stay focused on the tasks at hand, such as writing articles for my blog, and coordinating events for my NYC groups.

Yesterday (Tuesday), unexpectedly, my Internet was going down for hours for no reason. I was kind of caught off guard since I had already made plans to write a couple of new posts. Out of frustration, I was scratching my head trying to think what to do.

Eventually, I managed to outline quite a few new posts on my computer notepad. Overall, I consider my time well spent. This is the reason why I wanted to start a post about time management skills so you can increase your productivity when encountering similar situations. Here is a list of things I would do without Internet access.

1. Brainstorm for potential blog topics.

My blog is about news related to social media. I would try to think of some impactful major events that have happened recently in the social media industry so I can write quality posts about it. Make sure you write down those ideas. Simple little ideas, with reasonable amount of research and imagination, can lead to something substantially helpful to your readers.

2. Start writing a post.

Being a full time blogger, I’ve come to realization that writing a blog post is simple, but never easy to do. If you, like most people, tend to procrastinate, then it’s better for you to get started sooner than later. So start to write a blog at such moments without Internet access and then polish your content with more research when the Internet is back.

3. Think of ways to improve your posts.

It is critical to accept and analyze your readers’ feedback, because good feedback can help you improve your post quality. So take advantage of such moments to think about the negative comments or criticism you’ve been getting lately to make your blog more attractive to your audience.

4. Make goals for what you would like to accomplish, blog-wise, for the upcoming month.

Everybody must to have goals and plans. If you tell yourself to finish one post per day, you should stick to it. For my case, sometimes I need to both manage events and write posts. It’s very easy for me to prioritize one over another.

So make sure you fill your calendar with loads of tasks. Then make it happen. A goal is a dream with a deadline. Unless you have set up a goal, you will be running up and down without accomplishing anything.

5. Read a book that can improve your writing skills or blogging knowledge.

Currently, I have three books about blogging – Problogger by Darren Rowse, Wordpress for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson, and Authority Black Book by Jack Humphrey. Some of these books are a luxury for me to read given my hectic schedule.

But without Internet access, what’s better to do than reading an informative book? I know I will enjoy it! Of course, you can choose the alternative, like listening to an audio tape that you have downloaded before, such as Blog Success Roadmap Audio by Yaro Starak.

6. In my particular case, I also need to think about how to promote my blog.

Effectively using social media tools for marketing purposes is always on my priority list. This moment couldn’t be better since I will not have any online activities interrupting me. It is time to use my imagination and make some wild plans.

7. Drafting ideas for a new blog.

If you don’t have a blog but would like to have one, maybe it’s not a bad time for you to come up with some potential topics you’d like to discuss for your future blog, and think about the possible target markets you would like to tailor it to. Then when the Internet is back on, you can conduct further research to narrow your topics down.

Please note my list here is nowhere near being exhaustive. You should always add or subtract things from it based on your unique situation. Overall, you should get your hands on whatever can fill your mind with great inspiration. The beauty of having a blog (Extra credits for Wordpress blog) is to dream up an idea, and then write about it creatively. You imagination is the limit.

Just make sure you use the time productively. Hope you enjoy our first post on time management skills. What would you do if your Internet was down?
